The Model DD1 has been designed for open surgery. It has a shaft that is 10 cm long and 5 mm wide. The tip is 10 mm at its widest point. The controls are very simple, with an on/off button and a speed control knob.

The DD1 has found greatest success for vascular surgery (mobilization of venous grafts, including the saphenous vein, arterio-venous fistula preparation, tunneling for synthetic grafts) and colorectal surgery (dissection in the presacral space).

The upcoming Models DD1-20 and DD1-35 have shaft lengths of 20 cm and 35 cm, respectively, providing greater access into the abdomen and allowing longer tunnels.
